I needed a big portable floodlight: able to throw a lot of light, for hours, with no mains outlet. Wearable on the chest like a GoPro to walk with, or clampable around a pole.

The heart of the project: thermals

A 100 W LED gets extremely hot. Without serious thermal management, it loses efficiency, overheats and burns out fast. I integrated two server blowers, capable of generating a strong airflow in a compact form — cooling was the central part of the project.

Power and mounting

The floodlight is powered by an electric scooter or bike battery, which gives excellent runtime. The mounting allows several uses: worn on the chest, mounted on a support, or fitted onto a pole. A display shows the battery voltage, the temperature and the fan percentage.

Outcome

A portable, powerful light source for environments with no infrastructure, keeping the LED within an acceptable thermal range during extended use.
